Soaring high…
Beginnings
Bicol Merchant Marine College, Inc. (BMMCI) started 15 years ago in February,
1993, in a boarding house in Piot, Sorsogon City. Today, a four-storey school
building overlooking Sorsogon Bay houses this educational institution that
caters to a growing student population taking up the nautical engineering,
customs administration, hospitality management, and the one-year rating
courses.
BMMCI primarily offers maritime education, driven by the vision to produce
graduates who are globally competitive. A private non-sectarian non- stock
college, accredited by the Commission on Higher Education, BMMCI complies with
local and international standards as mandated by the International Maritime

On August 28, 2001 to 2004, the Quality Management System of BMMCI was
approved and certified by ABS Quality Evaluations Inc. Houston, Texas USA, of
the following Quality Management Standards: ISO 9002 : 1994 and ISO 9001 :

BMMCI equips its students with both knowledge and skills before they go on
actual boardship, using facilities such as mock bridge, radar/ARPA simulator
and other needed equipment and laboratories where they could do drills and
perform the theories that they have learned inside the classrooms.
BSMT and BSMARE students involve themselves in actual ship familiarization.
BSHM student are not only trained in the laboratories but are immersed in
different hotels in the Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, and Manila.
Last month, BMMCI marked its 15th foundation anniversary with a big
celebration.
A dream come true
The academic year 2007-2008 saw the full implementation of the partnership
between BMMCI and the Magsaysay Maritime Corporation (MMC) particularly the
MIS-MOL LINES Ltd., one of most prestigious manning agencies that provides the
maritime industry with quality marine officers. This partnership guarantees
deserving graduates for maritime courses a placement/employment right after
graduation, and training for those who do not initially qualify. BMMCI is now,
one of the training grounds for marine officers in the country to man the
international vessels in the near future.
BMMCI instructors/trainors together with other instructor of MMC-MIS-MOL LTD.
partner school over the Philippines have been givenw free training and
seminars on formulating modules and syllabi for implementation this school
year 2007-2008, at the MIS training Center in Dasmariñas Cavite, so that
partner schools would have a unified system of curriculum and strategy.
This college has molded and built several dreams. Just recently, Benil G.
Bagsit and Michiel M. Camposano passed the licensure examination for marine
engineering. C/E Nerbin C. Payos, OIC Francis Barrameda and OIC Arnel Espinola
are also undergoing apprenticeship sponsored by MARINA SECOJ in Japan, while

A place for future maritime officers
BMMCI is now building a training center with plans to add a boarding house
(barrack type) in Pangpang Sorsogon City for incoming maritime freshmen
students who qualify in the scholarship programmed sponsored by MMC – MIS-MOL
LTD. They will be closely monitored for three years and will be trained in the
Spirit of MOL a training ship of MIS-MOL LTD. for two months. They will then
be assigned to different ships of MOL, where they have to apply all the
knowledge and skills in handling task that will be assigned to them. When they
finish this apprenticeship they will take the licensure examination for
officership under the PRC.
