Preparing globally competitive youth
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
“Growth will always involve pain and sacrifice. Good things in life do not
come by easily. The joy that results, however, for those who invest and wait
is indescribable.”
The John Paul College story started at the conception of John Paul Montessori
School, Inc., in January 1996. Two educators –Drs. Julio and Marietta P.
Cantos–dreamed then of putting up a children’s school that would cater to the
education of the youth of Roxas town in Oriental Mindoro. Struggling to
realize this dream, Drs. Julio and Marietta P. Cantos presented the idea to
Engr. Manuel and Rosalina S. Andaya in February 1996 who shared the same
vision gave their full financial and moral support for this endeavor.
John Paul Montessori was officially born on June 3, 1996 when the Securities
and Exchange Commission approved its existence as a corporation. JPMS used the
house of Andayas and its former peoples’ quarters as the classrooms for the
first Casa Dei Bambini de Roxas (Children’s House in Roxas). Initially, it
offered only pre – school education consisting of Casa (Nursery), Junior Casa
(Kindergarten), and Senior Casa (Preparatory).
In the next school year (1997 – 1998), JPMS started its Elementary Department
and offered Grades I to IV. It was in the same year that the Elementary
Department was granted Government Recognition for being able to comply with
the requirements of the then Department of Education Culture and Sports.
The SY 1998-1999 was a significant year for John Paul Family. It was brought
in by the inauguration of the College Department and the High School
Department which operated under the John Paul College Corporation. JPC then
offered Technical – Vocational courses approved by the Technical Education
Skills Development Authority (TESDA): Agri – Fishery Technology (9 enrollees),
Automotive Technology (13 enrollees), Hotel and Restaurant Management (21
enrollees), Computer Programming (67 enrollees), and Computer Secretarial (8
enrollees).
The High School Department started its program for First Year and Second Year
levels. As the John Paul Montessori added the program for Grades V-VI, the
school experienced a big leap when its Casa Department was granted Government
Recognition.
The following School Year (1999 – 2000), JPC was granted permit to operate
degree courses under the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) such as
Bachelor in Elementary Education (with initial 14 enrollees), Bachelor
Secondary Education (Major in English and Mathematics) (11 enrollees),
Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (9 enrollees), Bachelor of Arts in
English Language (1 enrollee), as well as ladderized courses in Computer
Science (25 enrollees) and Business Administration (17 enrollees).
Being a new school did not hamper John Paul College to pursue its vision of
reaching greater heights in the field of education. This was evidenced by the
establishment of a tie – up with the National College of Business and Arts (NCBA
Systems). John Paul College became the Center of Studies of Executive Programs
in Business Administration and Public Administration. This feat carved a niche
for John Paul College as the first school in the South to offer Executive
Courses.
Adding to its many “firsts,” and JPC opened a tie-up with the Philippine Air
Force, Air Reserve Command Headquarters, 3rd Air Reserve Center at Fernando
Air Base, Lipa City. The school maintains its tie-up up to the present days
because it brought honors to the school. Its ROTC graduates challenged the Air
Force Cadets and Cadettes in the entire Philippines and garnered the top
awards such as the PAF ROTC Cadet of the Year for the year 2003 that was won
by Cadet Captain Samuel G. Rubias.
By the School Year 2003-2004, JPC was granted government recognition for the
following courses: Associate in Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Bachelor of
Secondary Education (English and Mathematics). It was also during this year
that it started offering TESDA Program – Certificate in Computer Technician.
By the School Year 2005-2006, John Paul College was granted permit to operate
two (2) significant degree programs – Bachelor of Science in Criminology and
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
In S.Y. 2006-2007, many big developments catapulted the two schools to greater
heights – increase of enrollees both in the Secondary and College Departments,
construction of two new buildings, covered – walk and waiting sheds for
students that became attractions to all Roxaseńos and teh residents of the
adjacent towns.
In just a short span of ten years, metamorphosed from a small school into a
beautiful institution which serves as a blueprint from which the lives of many
human beings have been patterned, shaped, and molded. Thus, as the cliché
says, “the legend that was John Paul continues…”
PRESENT TIMES
Since its birth in 1998, John Paul College has been creating a marked
difference in the field of learning in Oriental Mindoro. Together with its
perpetual commitment to reach out to the less fortunate individuals who have
great dreams of becoming successful someday, John Paul College seeks to
produce globally competitive and responsible graduates, who would soon occupy
the top ranks in military, government, education, computer, business and
technology.
The institution is investing in goodwill to attain its vision of progress and
quality education for all and most significantly, to live up to the moral and,
spiritual aspirations of its mentor, leader and guide, POPE JOHN PAUL II.
Thus, it provides scholarships for poor but deserving students through its own
initiative and through the assistance of private individuals and to a large
extent, the government. Statistics would reveal that two-thirds (2/3) of its
secondary and college population are all scholars.
Sponsors of high school scholarships are the Education Voucher System (EVS)
and Education Service Contracting, under the auspices of the Department of
Education.
On the other hand, college scholarships come from Private Education
Scholarship Financial Assistance (PESFA), Study Now Pay Later (SNPLP), State
Scholarship Program (SSP), Regional Scholarship Program (RSP), National
Scholarship Program (NSP), all granted by CHED and TESDA. The Philippine Air
Force Air Reserve Command, 3rd Air Reserve Center-Fernando Air Base, Lipa City
under Commandant LtC Rolando D. Crisostomo has also been providing scholarship
grants to deserving JPC-ROTC Cadets and Cadettes. Scholars also streamed from
the Provincial Government through the Provincial Governor Arnan C. Panaligan.
Scholarships from other individuals are also offered.
John Paul College has produced outstanding graduates who excelled in different
areas of endeavor. The brilliant valor of Cadet Captain Samuel Rubias, the
adjudged PAF ROTC Cadet of the Year 2003, was a milestone for JPC. He also
placed second as Model Cadet of the entire Armed Forces of the Philippines. In
November of the following year, he garnered the Gintong Kabataan Award for
Leadership, the most prestigious youth award granted by the Youth Provincial
Council of Oriental Mindoro. He is now a commissioned officer of the
Philippine Air Force – 2Lt Samuel G. Rubias O-140185 PAF.
Majority of JPC’s computer graduates have gained employment locally and even
in foreign countries. An outstanding achievement of the institution is the big
percentage of Education graduates who passed the Licensure Examination for
Teachers during the past four years – the highest national percentage rating
of which was declared by PRC to be 75%. These teachers are now topping the
ranks in both private and public schools in the Division of Oriental Mindoro.
This achievement proves that John Paul College is creating a benchmark in the
said profession.
Currently, John Paul College has sixty five (65) faculty members who are
qualified being holders of Masteral and Doctoral degrees in different areas of
specialization.
The academic success of John Paul College is supported by its physical growth
development such as the construction of two new buildings and the gigantic JPC
Pillars and main gate and the renovation of old structures. One of the new
buildings will house the cyber library equipped with internet facilities and a
big number of books and reading materials.
The school has an in-campus firing range for its Criminology students’
training and for local law enforcers’ shooting exercises. JPC is rearing
completion of its Criminology Laboratory.
Lately, John Paul College’s spacious, well-trimmed grounds hosted the District
Sports Meet where of the secondary schools of the town. Very soon, a
multipurpose gymnasium will rise on its 3.5 hectare grounds serve its
increasing student population. Sports facilities such as swimming pool and
football field are also in the drawing board.
With all its accomplishments and academic and physical improvements, John Paul
College’s popularity as an institution of learning continues to soar, inviting
more and more students.

Philippine Air Force, through the Air Reserve Command 3rd Air Reserve Center
based in Fernando Airfield in Lipa City shares a partnership with this
institution in molding dignified Cadets and Cadettes by instilling significant
core values of honor, valor, solidarity, duty and loyalty. The professional
training equips the Cadet Officers knowledge, physical endurance and strong
determination to emerge victorious in many battle. Its cadets have been
adjudged and awarded prestigious recognition and appreciation in the service.

department of Air Science and Tactics numbers most of the scholars of the
Philippine Air Force from the 3rd ARCEN and maintains the highest post of
recognition in the Reserve Center.
Being the lone Philippine Air Force ROTC Unit in Oriental Mindoro, John Paul
College monopolizes the reservist pool of the Air Force in the province which
can be immediately tapped and mobilized in case of any calamity or
contingency. It performs public services like spearheading, massive clean
drive, tree planting activities, volunteering in home building projects,
especially with the Gawad Kalinga Foundation. ROTC helps balance the
discipline and order, and provides the manpower requirement to the school
during activities.
The college has undying commitment to produce more professionals who have the
ability to compete, create, lead and excel towards full development of the
family, community and the global market in baccalaureate, technical and
vocational courses. The administration and the faculty constantly focuses on
innovating and discovering more responsive learning measures to serve
intellectual and practical education, continuous training and development of
the teaching and the non-teaching staff, accessibility to the state of the art
facilities, and promoting conducive atmosphere to learning. All these are
carried out to galvanize John Paul’s status as an upcoming center of
