Quality education at a minimal cost
In the heart of a quaint little town in Quezon province emerged an institution
destined to reach great heights.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
The LEON GUINTO MEMORIAL COLLEGE (LGMC) was born in 1971 out of a merger of
Atimonan Academy and Quezon Memorial School (AA-QMS, Inc.). These two
prestigious schools in the town of Atimonan, Quezon Province were headed by
two educators: AA under former Judge Mariano Eleazar and QMS under former
Quezon Province Board Member Domingo Escasa. The school was named after Leon
Guinto, the distinguished son of Atimonan, who served as a councilor of Hunta
Probinsial from 1922 to 1925. He became a Representative of 2nd District of
the then Tayabas (now Quezon) Province from 1925 to 1928, then elected as
Governor in 1928 and served until 1938.
The Leon Guinto Memorial College at 442-443 Mabini Street in Atimonan, Quezon.
LGMC started as a school for secondary education. In the early 1990’s, when
cost for college education started to increase, the institution, headed by its
Board of Directors, president Engr. Nestor Parafina, initiated the
organization of the College Department of LGMC to provide the youth of
Atimonan and the neighboring towns the opportunity to obtain college degrees
without having to contend with the burden of the high cost of education
provided by schools in Metro Manila and the provincial capital.
By 1994, the College Department started serving the youth of Atimonan,
initially offering Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) and Bachelor of
Science in Business Administration (BSBA), then later added Bachelor of
Elementary Education (BEED), Bachelor of Arts (AB), and Bachelor of Science in
Accountancy (BSA).
The college started out with 45 students paying R75 only per unit in tuition
fee. Classes were held from four o’clock in the afternoon to nine o’clock in
the evening, after the school hours of the secondary department were over so
as to accommodate the students who were working in the morning.
The first batch of graduates produced passers in the Licensure Examinations
for Teachers (LET), asserting the position of the institution as a functional
arm of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
PRESENT TIMES
The Leon Guinto Memorial College is committed to contributing professionals
that are responsive to the needs of the country’s present situation. Along
with this comes the dedication to give the less fortunate an opportunity to
pursue college degree. This is proven by the low tuition fees still being
enjoyed by LGMC students. From R100 per unit in 1994, the administration kept
to a minimum, registering an increase of up to R140 only per unit 12 years
after first offering college programs. This makes the LGMC the most affordable
higher education school in the whole Region IV. The College can be considered
an institution for quality learning at minimal cost.
The College also boasts of a steady increase of enrolment. In the beginning,
it only had 45 enrollees; now, the population surged to as much as 500
percent. With this boom in enrolment, the administration is now on its way to
acquiring an annex building to accommodate the growing number of students.
With each passing year, LGMC continues to produce numerous licensed teachers
and professionals in different fields of endeavor. To be able to continue this
splendor, the administration never ceases to think of better things that can
be added to the college, giving out the best to every clientele of the
institution.
Moreover, the administration extends its resources on how to generate job
opportunities just to give its graduates a chance to be employed right after
the commencement rites. The College is also incessant in hiring competent
faculty members, who have the dedication and willingness to carry the mission
of giving quality education. They are constantly improving the facilities to
help the clients acquire learning in a more modern way, to cope with the
ever-changing pace of technology.
Instruction with passion combined with an administration with love and care is
the formula of the success of the Leon Guinto Memorial College and its
clients. Everything done and prospected by the school at present resembles its
valued responsibility to the society in adding competent professionals out of
different kinds of people, regardless of their status. The ultimate goal,
needless to say, directs to the progress.
