Malayan Colleges Laguna
May 2008
Bringing the finest education closer to the people of Laguna...
Beginnings
To establish a premiere university in the South that offers globally
competitive education at a comparatively low cost. This was the vision that
gave birth to Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the
Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT).
When the MIT was acquired by the Yuchengco Group of Companies (YGC) in 1999,
facilities were upgraded, the academic curricula were revised and new programs
were added, aiming to turn Mapua into a center of excellence.
The owners of MIT, led by Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, wanted to
concretize their dream of bringing excellent education closer to the
grassroots. Thus, a six-hectare land was acquired in Laguna, one of the
country’s most promising industrial and commercial districts. That was when
MCLceased to be a vision, and became a reality.
On January 23, 2006, MCL acquired its corporate personality, managed by an
interim group under the leadership of Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, Mapua president and
CEO, and concurrently MCL president and CEO. Other members of the group are
Milagros V. Reyes, former Mapua executive vice president for administration
and COO; Engr. Dodjie Maestrecampo, then EVP for academic affairs; Engr.
Dennis H. Tablante, dean of the School of EE-ECE-CoE; Engr. Christopher F.
dela Rosa, director of Development Office for Information Technology; Raoul A.
Villegas, comptroller of IT Center, and Daniel R. Francisco, president of
People e-Serve, Corp.
MCL was founded on the following mission of: (1) educating students to have
the entry-level technical competencies, soft skills and global perspective as
to be the most sought-after graduates by industries worldwide; (2) producing
social wealth from the generation of new knowledge; and (3) helping solve
industry’s and society’s problems by the expert application of existing
knowledge. With this noble mission and vision for its graduates, MCL advocates
life-long learning and holistic total human development.
In November 2006, MCL received the approval from the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED) to offer programs of study in Engineering, Information
Technology, and Business.
MCL is composed of three colleges; the MIT at Laguna, E.T. Yuchengco College
of Business at Laguna, and the College of Information Technology. In the
coming school year, a new college, the Mapua-PTC College of Maritime Education
and Training (CMET), will open its doors to the second batch of Malayan
students. PTC stands for the Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc., one of the
country’s leading companies in maritime industry and crewing management and a
partner in maritime education.
Today, MCL stands as a gateway to excellence and expertise in the field of
higher education in the Calabarzon region. What was once a vision has become
an unmistakable reality.
Present times
Among the highlights of activities at MCL during the past year were the IT
Literacy Training Program for high school teachers in partnership with
Microsoft Corporation, the MCL Cup 2007, the Adopt-a- School Project in joint
partnership with the ABS-CBN Foundation and PetroEnergy Resources Corp., the
Science Exhibit with the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology;
etc.
The IT Literacy Training Program, held summer of 2007, addressed and enhanced
the basic computer skills of more than 200 high school teachers in Laguna to
help them integrate computer programs in designing their lesson plans,
managing class records, and preparing class presentations. Computer teachers
were also given a week-long enhancement training on Microsoft Visual Basic
6.0, Microsoft Access, and Microsoft Publisher.
MCL also extended its support to the young achievers of Laguna, Batangas, and
Cavite, in the fields of Math, Science, spelling, oration, essay writing,
cheerdance, and choral Singing. Sixty-three teams from various schools in the
three provinces flocked to the grounds of MCL for the MCL Cup 2007. The
over-all winners were The Sisters of Mary School (Boystown), Canossa Academy –
Lipa City, and Colegio San Agustin – Biñan as first, second and third placers,
respectively. The MCL Cup is envisioned to be an annual event that will gather
the crème of the crop in the region.
MCL also joined forces with ABS-CBN Foundation, PetroEnergy Resources
Corporation, and the Department of Education to launch the Adopt-a-School
Program, which aims to deliver various literacy enhancement programs in the
region, with particular focus on math and science. So far three batches of
secondary school educators have undergone a series of seminars and symposia on
the current trends and techniques in classroom teaching on different math and
science subjects. The program has already catered to 345 teachers in the
region and will continue to address the academic concerns of high school
educators.
Also in line with MCL’s commitment to bring holistic academic experience
closer to the grassroots, the Philippine Science Centrum Exhibit found in
Marikina was brought by MCL, in coordination with the Philippine Foundation
for Science and Technology (PFST), to its very own campus. Students from the
region, especially those from public elementary schools, did not have to
travel far to witness the exhibit. MCL hosted the science exhibit for more
than one month wherein hundreds of bubbly and excited elementary pupils came
tumbling down their buses to get a first-hand experience of the amazing
wonders of science and technology.
All these efforts are part and parcel of Malayan Colleges Laguna’s vision of
becoming a global steeple of excellence not only in professional education,
but also in research and socio-civic involvement.
