San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite
The search for knowledge, the exercise of love…
San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Cavite City (SSC-R de Cavite) is one among a handful of Philippine schools that offer the Recollect tradition of tutelage – one steeped in the search for knowledge (scientia) that leads to the exercise of love (caritas).
In 1966, after 356 years of spreading the gospel in Cavite City, the Recollect fathers founded San Sebastian Junior College, an exclusive high school for boys and a co-educational tertiary level institution in Commerce, Liberal Arts and a two-year course in Secretarial Science. The school had only a single building with only 281 students in the high school and college departments.
In 1986, the high school department turned co-educational. Enrollment also increased, prompting expansion and upgrading of facilities and curricular offerings.
In 2006, it opened a new campus located in Cañacao, Cavite City, for the use of pre-school, elementary and high school students. It also houses the Recoletos 4th centennial gymnasium.
SSC-R de Cavite continues to set high standards in the province. Its Accountancy graduates have repeatedly surpassed national passing figures in the board exams for certified public accountants. In October 2007, SSC-R’s passing rate was 66%.
CISCO Learning Institute, USA has also chosen SSC-R de Cavite to be one of the sites of a current research project on the use of effective classroom activities and change in the teaching practice of CISCO Networking Program. Only 15 countries are included in the study.
SSC-R de Cavite also has a track record for hosting various provincial, regional and national events, such as the Double-based Cocktail National Competition in March 2007 where one of its HRM students won second place; the 4th Student Congress of the Philippines Institute of Industrial Engineering; the 19th Inter-University Industrial Engineering Quiz Competition; the 1st CALABARZON ECE Summit; and the 3rd ICT Cavite Youth Congress.
The Baycats, the school’s varsity moniker, is one of the most popular in the National Athletics Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) having figured out in decisive matches particularly in basketball and volleyball. The women’s volleyball team is currently the champion of the most recent season. The basketball men’s team is also a top contender of the Fr. Martin’s Cup having fought some championship matches in this league that includes big schools in Metro Manila.
SSC-R de Cavite is in active pursuit of the propagation of the Catholic faith through education, as well as via the activities of various religious organizations like the SSC-R de Cavite Chapters of the Knights of Columbus, Secular Augustinin Recollect Fraternity (SARF), among others.
The institution is a member of national and international Catholic educational associations such as the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP), and the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU).
