Techninical-vocational education has proven time and again that it can be the key to a better, more productive life. Thousands of out-of-school youths, or the desperately jobless can attest to that. Peter D. Gabutina, a TESDA success story, adds to that list.

Fifteen years ago, Peter, now 37 years old, took up automotive servicing under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). He trained at the Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMPC) in Bicutan, had his on-the-job training at TMPC along Quezon Ave., and finally landed a job as an automotive technician at TMPC in Cubao. He was earning a very small salary, maybe around P4,000 to P6,000 a month, but he did not mind because he knew that this was better than being jobless and not knowing any skill.

With his meager income from his job as auto technician, Peter told me that he saved up for a college education. He eventually enrolled in the night classes being offered at the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) where he finished a degree in Architecture.

Working at day and studying at night – this did not tire the young Peter. He was even more fired up to make it because of the hardships he was encountering.

“In the morning, I was doing manual hard labor while at night I was busy planning, drafting and drawing architectural designs,’’ recalls Peter.

Today, Peter co-owns a construction company called R3 Summit Construction Inc. which has been in operation for seven years now. He is also connected with MetroMeter office furniture where he is a project development consultant. He likewise handles the construction department of the said company which made Peter feel more productive.

What he had gone through, Peter now recommends as a strategy that works – take up a course with TESDA that fits your interest, get TESDA-certified, get a job, get a degree — and start fulfilling your dreams from there.

“I never thought that a technical vocational course in automotive servicing would help me reach my dream. It is a practical strategy that I would like to promote among the young generation especially during this time of economic turmoil,” Gabutina proudly shares with us.
