There is still the need to have a well-defined sports program in Western Visayas.
Asst. Schools’ Division Supervisor Warrlito Bagsit said this in a broadcast interview, even as he believed that Region VI had produced many good, outstanding athletes.
Bagsit said defining a sports program starts at the local level where schools and government units know well the potentials of their youth and from there start to develop athletes.
“A strong foundation is needed so that athletes are developed young and then they undergo continuous training and gain the support as they go up in various levels of competitions,” Bagsit said.
He added that the different municipalities and provinces can look where they are good at and then develop rigorously, like Barotac Nuevo with its football.
Moreover, Bagsit said, a well-defined sports program also depends on the whole year round support of schools and local government units, as to incentives, facilities, health and nutrition and training given.
He added that good performance of athletes in the field also begins in the elimination processes in the schools, where accuracy and honesty of athletes’ records are maintained.
Meanwhile, Mr. Gilbert Solidum, Division Sports Coordinator, said that athletes in Western Visayas have been performing well and have given the National Capital Region a good fight in sports competitions.
Solidum said Region 6 athletes have excelled in athletics, ball games and other sports events.
“It is in individual or indoor sports where our athletes are a bit weak, as there are no state-of-the-art training facilities here,” Solidum said.
Solidum said the on-going Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet is again a test for the regional athletes to show that they can be a team to reckon with in the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa.
