Molding your future today
Don Zacarias P. De Guzman sowed the seeds of the Guzman Educational System on
October 11 1947, when he founded “Safe Driving Institute” along Recto Avenue
in Manila.
Humble Beginnings
Driven by a selfless dedication to serve the poorest of the poor through equal
educational opportunities, the school opened with eight students. Less than a
year later, the school relocated to a small but modest building in front of
the Central Market.
It was not long after, however, that the founder’s noble mission spread,
necessitating not only an expansion of the school’s facilities, but also its
array of courses. In 1949, the name of the school was changed to
“International Automotive and Diesel Institute” to reflect the new short term
Vocational-Technical courses that had been added.
The success of these early efforts not only brought some fulfillment to Don
Zacarias, but the realization as well that the only total development of the
Filipino can his full potential be attained. Aware that such a development can
only be made possible in a full-fledged school, Don Zacarias founded the
Guzman Institute of Technology in 1950. Soon after, a sister school, Guzman
Institute of Fashion was established to address a surging social life in
post-war years.
The ever-increasing enrollment soon necessitated the construction of a six
storey building in the heart of Quiapo, Manila. The year 1960 saw the transfer
of the school to this new site and the opening of additional courses including
Secondary education. In 1968, another sister school, Guzman Institute Of
Electronics, was established in the old Cinerama Building, to meet the demands
of the then sun rising electronics industry. It eventually transferred to the
more spacious Ramon Roces Building along Soler in Quiapo.
The early Martial Law years in the seventies, however, did not spare the
Guzman Institutions from floundering. Among the measures undertaken at this
critical period of uncertainty was the introduction of Two-Year Technical
Courses to supplement the regular courses being offered, and in anticipation
of an economic recovery.
The awakening of the economy at this time also brought about various
opportunities in other careers, but wrought its toll on the school’s
administrative line up. However, a rationalization of the school’s direction
led to the formulation of the mission and mandate of Guzman Institute of
Technology to its present concentration on Technical Vocational Education.
It was on December 30, 1992, that a fire razed the Quiapo six-storey building
to the ground. While make-shift rooms were set up in its aftermath, the paltry
facilities adversely affected the school’s enrollment in the ensuing terms.
While the Guzman Institute Of Technology was reeling from the effects of this
unfortunate incident, its sister school, the Guzman Institute Of Electronics,
took up the cudgels to keep the founder’s mission and pioneering spirit alive.
It opened the Guzman Institute of Agriculture & Technology in Pinugay, Baras,
Rizal in 1993, and its Dasmariñas, Cavite Branch in 1994.
Not to be outdone and undaunted by the disaster that befell it, the Guzman
Institute of Technology started to build on the ruins of the old building. An
imposing four-storey building rose in 1995 to which Guzman Institute of
Electronics was also relocated in 1996. This consolidation of resources paved
the way for the elevation of the institute into the present Guzman College of
Science & Technology (GSCT).
Today, under its present generation of leaders, Guzman College of Science &
Technology continues to explore new frontiers in pursuit of the mission of its
founders.
Present Times
The Guzman College of Science and Technology today holds the primary spot in
the field of Automotive Technology. With a firm partnership with Toyota Motor
Philippines, the latest technologies and innovations in the automotive
industry are at arms’ reach. It holds the gold medals in both the youth and
open contests in the skills competition sponsored by TESDA.
Upgrading of facilities is on-going. The new audio-visual room will be
functional this December. To cater to female clientele, a four year course in
B.S. in Office Administration will be offered by June 2008.
Instructors had recently attended the upgrading seminar as required by TESDA.
The GCST has also been accredited as a Testing Center for Manila in the
following disciplines: Automotive, Building Wiring, Ref & Air (HVAC). It is
also the recipient of a grant in its partnership with the Department of
Environment and National Resources (DENR) in relation to its National CFC
Phase-out Plan Project.
GCST continues to be a veritable source of skilled manpower for industries.
With a high placement rate of 98%, the Office of Student Affairs coordinates
with more than 300 companies nationwide for their requirements for trainees
and employees.
Through the sponsorship of Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation, 10 automotive
students now enjoy full scholarship grant. Under Toyota Quezon Avenue the
scholars are: Joel Tipones, Joseph Laurio, Bryan Evangelista, Johnnel Loja and
Venancio Joseph Garcia III. Under Toyota Otis Inc.: Ervin Dave Penuela, John
Ryan Pineda, Maximo Palingkod, Joseph Regondola and Glenn Ford Fenellere.
Courses Offered
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education is a four year course which
prepares an individual for a teaching career in technical education majoring
fields of Electronics, Electrical, Computer, Automotive, Refrigeration and
Air-conditioning.
The Bachelor of Science in Office Administration is a course designed to
prepare the grade for a career in office administration specifically in
various general and administrative supports, supervisory and managerial
positions. Its competency based curriculum contains a balanced program of
General Education Courses, Business Core Courses, Office administration Core
Courses and Professional Courses for specialization and enrichment.
The two-year Hotel & Restaurant Management is a course that provides knowledge
in front office operations, bartending, housekeeping, baking as well as food
and beverage services
The two-year technology courses Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Technology is
a course designed to equip an individual with operational skills in
refrigeration and air-conditioning servicing, maintenance and repair of window
and package-type air-conditioners and residential and commercial refrigeration
units. And the Automotive Technology is a course designed to familiarize a
student with the knowledge, skills and attitude required in the field of
automotive servicing in accordance with the standards of the industry.
The Electrical Technology is a course designed to provide operational skills
in building wiring installations; commissioning of electrical wiring,
equipment systems for residential, industrial and commercial establishments.
The Electronics Technology is also called Consumer Electronics. It provides
operational skills in diagnosing and’ troubleshooting of common household
appliances, replacement of parts as well as assembling and setting up of
industrial and commercial electronic equipment.
The Computer Technology trains students to assemble and set up computer-based
industrial and commercial electronic equipment.
The Welding is a course designed to enhance the knowledge, attitude and skills
of a SMAW or GTAW welder in accordance with industry standards.
The one-year Vocational Courses include Auto Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, Ref
& Air Mechanics and Practical Electricity. The five-month special
entrepreneurial training with certificate include Special Auto Mechanics,
Special Diesel Mechanics, Special Ref and Air Mechanics, Special Basic
Electronics, Special Industrial Electricity, Special Auto Electricity, Special
Motor Rewinding and Special Welding (Arc Welding, Oxy-Acetylene Welding,
Tungsten Inert Gas Welding, Metal Inert Gas Welding).
The 60-hour courses include Auto Electricity, Engine Trouble Shooting and Tune
- Up - Engine Overhaul & Repair, Building Wiring, Basic Electronics,
Audio-Video Servicing, Motor Rewinding and Ref and Air Servicing. There is
also a 40-Hour Course in Welding.
The College also offers high school in morning and afternoon sessions.
