Planting the seeds of tomorrow...
Monticello International College began primarily as an English tutorial
institution and operated under the name Haksan International Language Academy
(ILA). The incorporation of Haksan ILA was the first concrete step towards the
realization of our founders’ dream to establish a leading educational
institution not only in Baguio City but in the Asian continent.
It was indeed a blessing when Andrew Cho crossed paths with two individuals of
like mind – Mignone Solano Marquez and Ma. Margarita Cecilia Martires Lijauco
whose advice and insights would serve invaluable to the continued existence of
the school.
They were bound together by an uncompromising belief and a common vision. They
realized that the challenges Filipinos face in the educational system are
becoming more and more complex. There are many who may have a strong academic
aptitude but the costs associated with acquiring quality education are just
too high.
There are others who may have the financial capability to sustain their
education but find that there is so much left wanting in many of these
institutions – they may afford the tuition costs but they wonder if it is
worth the investment.
The founders hoped to answer by awarding scholarships to the most deserving
applicants coming from the public schools. The latter would be addressed by
offering a curriculum that will truly enable the students to reach their
potential as learners and thereby be ensured of a more successful future.
They envisioned a school that would provide the kind of education that will
answer the needs and desires of learners from every walk of life. The founders
sought the assistance of academic leaders with the insight, commitment and the
training to guide the school towards the future.
In 2003 the Elementary and the High School programs emerged under the
leadership of Atty. Ruben Corpuz and Dr. Brenda Corpuz, both established
educators. It was also during their tenure that the school began to operate
its Teacher Education programs – Bachelor in Elementary Education and Bachelor
in Secondary Education.
In 2005, Carina Bugasto Navarro and Jacqueline Carlos Gutierrez took the helm,
leading the school through a period of transition and progress. Under their
tenure, the school continued to evolve to meet the needs of its increasing
student population. The academic program was reformed to emphasize language
proficiency, to strengthen math and science skills and to encourage values
formation both in the elementary and secondary levels. Academic expansion in
the school also included the opening of a preschool program.
In addition, professional growth among members of the faculty was reinforced
through the school’s faculty development program which included courses that
re-acquainted them with core competencies required in the profession. In all
of their initiatives the present academic leaders emphasized the teachers’
adoption of approaches and principles to guide them in their teaching like
that of the Communicative Language Teaching Approach, the principles and
methods of Dr. Maria Montessori. This period also saw a rapid expansion of the
school’s facilities with the addition of a new building, play center,
mini-zoo, a spacious atrium, as well as a wider driving range for the
students’ golf lessons.
As the school continues to grow, so does its capacity to improve the quality
of education for its students. Today, every effort is directed towards
generating knowledge to improve student opportunity, achievement and success.
We at MIC confidently look forward to tomorrow.
Vision, mission and philosophy
MIC envisions to be a leading, client-oriented and dynamic institution
producing globally competitive graduates who are known for their competence
and commitment to genuine service. Its mission is to provide the appropriate
environment within which each student will be able to maximize his learning
potential and to reinforce values of commitment, personal responsibility and
accountability.
There are three important ideas that underscore the MIC philosophy – being
able to dream; caring enough to make these dreams come true and facing the
challenges that come in pursuit of these dreams.
Dreams whether they be small dreams or big dreams are shared in common by
everyone, no matter what their stature in life may be. It is not nationality,
nor age, nor gender, nor education specific. What makes dreamers distinct and
stand out is that they care enough to make these dreams into realities. They
take the extra mile and strive to make a difference. Dreams remain dreams
unless there are people who believe that these should be the underlying reason
propelling them into action, driving them to dedicate themselves to ensuring
that seeds sown along the way would bear fruits out of which others shall
likewise commit themselves to carry on the mission.
Objectives
Monticello International College endeavors to provide quality educational
experiences which will enable its students to acquire functional knowledge,
critical thinking, creative skills and desirable values within an atmosphere
that promotes dynamic interaction between and among administrators, teaching
and non-teaching personnel and students.
Uniqueness MIC
Monticello International College is the only school where the unmistakable
scent of Baguio may be enjoyed – what with pine trees surrounding the 4.5
hectares of land on which the school is nestled. It boasts of an excellent
academic program with a superior faculty complement. Individualized
instruction is guaranteed with the minimal number of students per class.
The school is an ideal and safe environment conducive to learning. The faculty
employs a pragmatic and personalized mode of teaching to suit individual
student’s capability and special interests. Values formation within the
purview of the MIC philosophy is an essential part of every student’s
learning. Academic freedom and creativity is encouraged within an environment
that is certain to maximize potential. Students are exposed to a variety of
cross-cultural experiences which enhances their capacity to interact
confidently with people of different cultures and nationalities.
Academic programs
Monticello International College offers Preschool, Elementary and Secondary
courses. These are complemented by intensive English as a Second Language
(ESL) course for non-English speaking students. Offered under its collegiate
program are teacher-education courses – the Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED)
and Bachelor in Secondary Education (BSED).
Faculty
MIC faculty members are very much committed to their students’ learning. They
are deeply involved in the most critical issues affecting or influencing their
students’ education, from examining the merits of the school environment and
their teaching methods and techniques to exploring the fundamental questions
about the students’ learning and development. Their work as teachers, as
mentors and as "second-parents" has a profound impact on the lives of their
students and the community in general.
Students
MIC students bring a wealth of experience to the school. Students of different
cultures and backgrounds interact as they go about their daily school work and
thus they enrich each other’s knowledge, promote cultural awareness and
understanding across cultures.
