A steady climb to success
Mount Carmel College (MCC) is one of the landmarks of Escalante City in the
province of Negros Occidental. It is 96 kilometers away from Bacolod City, the
provincial capital. It was founded by the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm.) on
February 21, 1961 and fully recognized by the government on June 21, 1967. The
first Carmelite Friars came from the Netherlands upon the invitation of the
late Bishop Epifanio Surban of the Dumaguete Diocese. The school started as
high school on May 22, 1961 and in 1963 became a College with the opening of
the tertiary and elementary departments.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
MCC is situated in a four hectare land with strategically located buildings,
multi-purpose gymnasium and spacious sports complex which are good and
conducive to learning. It has updated and modernized facilities like the
Library and Instruction Media Center, standardized classrooms and laboratories
(science, computer, speech, audiovisual, typing, technical machine shop, home
economics).

Escalante City, Negros Occidental. The first director was Rev. Fr. Benetius
Egberink, O.Carm. who served until 1966. He was succeeded by the Rev. Fr.
Edgar Koning, O.Carm., from 1967 to 1970. The Rev. Fr. Crispin Offermans,
O.Carm. served from 1970 to 1972. From 1972 until 1994, Mr. Loreto Bering
became its first layman director.
In 1994, Rev. Fr. Eduardo Albiño, O.Carm. became the first Filipino Carmelite
Director. He was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Modesto Malandac, O.Carm. up to 1998.
From 1998 to 2002, Rev. Fr. Christian Buenafe, O.Carm., served as the School
President. 2002 to 2006 saw Fr. Rey Caigoy, O.Carm. serving the school. At
present, the School President is Fr. Perfecto Lluch Adeva, Jr. O.Carm.
The Collegiate Courses offered with government recognition through the
Department of Education are Bachelor of Arts (GR No. 197, s. 1967), Bachelor
of Science in Education (GR No. 198, s. 1967), Bachelor of Science in
Elementary Education (GR No. 199, s. 1967), Bachelor of Science in Commerce (GR
No. 200, s. 1967), Secretarial Course (GR No. 201, s. 1967).
PRESENT TIMES
In recent years, several non-degree courses were offered with government
recognition provided by the Deparment of Education, Culture and Sports. These
are One Year Proficiency in Practical Electricity, proficiency in Electronics
and Computer (GR No. V-007, s. 1993), Associate in Computer Data Processing (GR
No. C-R009, s. 1995), and Associate in Accounting Science (GR No. 22, s.
1994).
MCC is a member of the Carmelite School System in the Philippines (CSSP) and
the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP).
Mount Carmel College has contributed many outstanding citizens to Philippine
society. Carmelians who excelled in their specialized fields include: Atty.
Frank Chavez (former Solicitor General), Enrique Pinongan (Provincial
Administrator, Negros Occidental), Atty. Danilo Francisco (lawyer, Malacañang
Palace), Rosanna Esperancilla Anasarias (Provincial Administrator, Department
of Education), James Yap (Sports), Nelda Vergara (Provincial Treasurer),
Rodnel De Los Reyes (City Administrator, Sagay, Negros Occidental), Dr. Rico
Ponce, Ph.D. (Spirituality), Dr. Gabriel Dolotina, Ph.D. (Educational
Management), Dr. Adonis Guancia, M.D. (Oncologist), Dr. Rey De Los Reyes, M.D.
(OB-Gyne), Dr. Maria Delfa Tan Zanoria, M.D. (Cardiologist), Dr. Faith
Tancinco Barcenilla, M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine), Dr. Chito Tancinco,
M.D. (Anaesthesiologist), Dr. Edgar Vaflor, M.D. (Internal Medicine), Dr.
Evelyn Arope Jubal, M.D. (Pediatrician), Dr. Neil Timogan, M.D. (General
Medicine), Dr. Teresa Ballesteros, M.D. (General Medicine), Dr. Mila Hinolan,
M.D. (Dental Medicine), Dr. Anthony Hinolan, M.D. (Chief, Health Office,
Binalbagan, Negros Occidental), Dr. Julie Yap, Villanueva, M.D. (General
Medicine, Isabela, Negros Occidental), Dr. Andres Gumban, M.D. (Pulmonologist),
Dr. Edwin Mendoza, M.D. (Pediatrician), Virgilio Manguilimutan (Certified
Public Accountant).
Fifteen Carmelians have also been ordained priests while five as Religious
Sisters. Not to be left behind are the thousands of teachers and graduates who
walked its portals and are now successful in business and different areas of
work.
